| The Washington Park neighborhood is the area immediately surrounding the large urban park of the same name covering about 165 acres between Virginia Avenue, Downing Street, Lousiana Avenue, and Franklin Street. It was one of the very first city neighborhoods established and by the mid 1880s it was large enough to become its own suburb, South Denver. However, after a burgeoning population and economy, it was annexed by Denver in the 1890s. The park has many amenities, including a fitness center, a boat house on Smith Lake, and walking paths. Beautiful brick houses and enclaves of shops and restaurants are spread throughout the neighborhood. |
